Environmental Permitting Case Studies

Compliance and Closure, Inc., Ground Water Remediation System, Engineering Certification for NPDES Permit

We performed an engineering review of an existing ground water remediation system at a site in San Jose, California, contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons. We evaluated the process equipment design, specifications, throughput capacity, operating procedures and effectiveness in removing chemicals of concern from ground water based on calculations and actual operating records/laboratory analyses.

The purpose of the review was to assess the adequacy of the ground water treatment system to meet requirements of the NPDES General Permit No. CAG912002, issued by the California Regional Water Quality Control Board (RWQCB), San Francisco Bay Region. We certified the adequacy of the system as required for filing a Notice of Intent to discharge treated water pursuant to the NPDES permit. The NPDES permit to discharge treated ground water was issued to the facility by the RWQCB.

Compliance and Closure, Inc., Ground Water Remediation System Design and Engineering Certification for NPDES Permit

We performed process design to complete and re-commission a former ground water remediation system at an auto workshop site in San Jose, California. Our design integrated new process equipment with existing granular activated carbon vessels and piping to form a fully functional remediation system capable of extracting and treating ground water and free petroleum product from on site wells.

Equipment sized and selected included a reciprocating compressor, pneumatic submersible well pumps, a settling/equalization tank, an oil/water separator and system process controls. We prepared a design package including a piping and instrumentation diagram (P&ID), equipment specifications and catalog cut sheets. We also certified the proposed treatment system as adequate to meet the requirements of the national pollutant discharge elimination system (NPDES) General Permit (VOC and Fuels). The NPDES permit to discharge treated ground water was issued to the facility by the RWQCB.
